1955 Brocade Crochet Lace Doily Vintage Pattern

This free 1955 Brocade lace crochet doily pattern is worked with single crochets over strands of threads in various rounds. A lot of cutting and rejoining. Measures 13 1/2 inches in diameter.

MATERIALS:
Size 30 crochet mercerized thread
Size 10 steel hook

Starting at center, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st Round: working over 6 strands of thread, make 16 sc in ring. Join with sl st to first sc.

2nd Round: Working over the 6 strands only, make 23 sc, frop the 6 strands, sl st in next 2 sc on ring (this completes first loop), * working over the 6 strands, make 8 sc, sl st in 16th sc of preceding loop, 17 sc over the 6 strands, drop the 6 strands, sl st in next 2 sc on ring. Repeat from * until 7 loops have been completed, make 8 sc over the 6 strands, sl st in 8th sc of first loop, 7 sc over the 6 strands, sl st in last sc on ring, sl st in same place where first sl st was made. Cut off. Cut off remaining strands and fasten ends securely on wrong side of work.

FIRST PETAL:
With right side of work facing, attach thread to 9th sc of any loop, ch 38.

1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 3, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last ch, ch 1, sl st in next sc on same loop where thread was attached. Ch 3, turn.

2nd Row: * Sc in next loop, ch 3. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn.

3rd Row: Sc in first loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 10 times. Turn.

4th Row: Sl st in next ch, sc in loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 9 times. Ch 3, turn.

5th Row: Sc in first loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 8 times. Turn.

6th Row: Sl st in first ch, sc in loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 7 times. Turn.

7th Row: Sl st in first ch, sc in loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 6 times. Ch 3, turn.

8th Row: Sc in first loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop 3 times. Cut off.

With right side of work facing and working along starting chain, attach thread to 15th sc of preceding loop on center and work second half of petal as follows:

1st Row: Sc in next 37 ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Sc in next 37 sc, sl st in 15th sc of preceding loop on center. Turn.

3rd Row: Sc in next 37 sc. Turn.

4th Row: Sl st in first 2 sc, ch 1, sc in next 35 sc, sl st in next sc on center. Turn.

5th Row: Sc in next 27 sc, work off next 2 sc as 1 st (1 sc decreased). Ch 1 turn.

6th Row: Sc in each sc across, sl st in next sc on center. Turn.

7th Row: Sc in each sc across. Turn.

8th Row: Sl st in first 8 sc, ch 1, sc in next 15 sc, sl st in next sc. Turn.

9th Row: Sl st in first 2 sc, sc in next 13 sc. Ch 1, turn.

10th Row: Sc in next 9 sc, sl st in next sc. Cut off.

Make 7 more petals in the same manner.

To Join Petals:

Cut 6 strands of thread, 60 inches long. With right side of work facing and working over 6 strands, attach thread to side of sc at end of first ow of second half of first petal, make 3 sc in same place, working along edge of first half of same petal, make 2 sc in turning loop of first row, sc in side of next sc, 2 sc in next turning loop, sc in next end sc, sc in next turning loop, sc in next end sc, 2 sc in end sc of the 7th row, (2 sc in next loop, sc in next sc) twice; 2 sc in end sc of 8th row, (2 sc in next loop, sc in next sc) 3 times; (3 sc in next turning loop) 5 times; sc in next end sc, 2 sc in next turning loop, sc in next free sc on center loop, now, working along edge of second half of second petal, sc in first 4 sc of 7th row, 2 sc in end sc of 8th row, sc in next sc of same row, sc in first 4 sc of 9th row, 2 sc in first sc of 10th row, sc in next 6 sc, drip loop from hook, insert hook from back of work in 31st sc on first petal and draw dropped loop through, sc in same sc where last sc was made on second petal, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 end sc, sc in next sc of 7th row, ch 3, skip 2 sc on first petal, sl st in next sc, 4 sc in sp just formed, sc in next 4 sc on scond petal, ch 5, skip 2 sc on first petal, sl st in next sc, 7 sc in sp just formed, sc in same sc where last sc was made on second petal, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 7, sl st in 6th sc of last sp made, 5 sc in loop just formed, ch 7, skip 3 sc of same sp where last sl st was made, sl st in next sc, 5 sc in ch 7 loop just formed, ch 3, skip 5 sc on first petal, sl st in next sc, 4 sc in last ch 3 sp just formed, 5 sc in next sp, 4 sc in next sp, sc in same place where last sc was made on second petal, sc in next 2 end sc, sc in next 5 sc, ch 9, skip last 9 sc made, sl st in next sc, 5 sc in ch 9 loop just formed, ch 9, sl st in center sc of center sp below, 5 sc in ch 9 loop just formed, ch 9, sl st in 2nd sc of next sp, 5 sc in ch 9 loop just formed, ch 5, skkip next 5 sc on first petal, sl st in next sc, now, working across to second petal make 7 sc in each of the next 4 sps, sc in same place where last sc was made on second petal, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next end sc, sc in next 2 end sc, ch 9, skip last 9 sc made, sl st in next sc, (5 sc in ch 9 loop just formed, ch 9, sl st in center sc of next sp) 3 times; 5 sc in ch 9 loop just formed, ch 5, skip 7 sc on first petal, sl st in next sc, now working across to second petal make 7 sc in each of next 6 sps, sc in same sc where last sc was made on second petal, make 3 sc in next end sc and continue to join adjacent sides of remaining petals in same manner. Join with sl st in first sc at tip of first petal. Cut off remaining strands and fasten ends neatly on wrong side.

Now work in rounds as follows:

1st Round: Working from left to right, ch 13, sl st in center sc of next sp, 5 sc in ch 13 loop just formed, * (ch 9, sl st in center sc of next sp, 5 sc in loop just formed) 4 times; ch 9, sl st in first sc of same sp where last sl st was made, 5 sc in loop just formed (1 sp increased). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in 4th ch of ch 13, sl st in 3rd, 2nd and first ch of same loop, sl st in same place where sl st was made at tip of petal, working over the sl sts and starting chain make 5 sc in last loop formed. This completes First Half of round.

2nd Half: Working from right to left make 7 sc in each sp around. Join with sl st in first sc.

2nd, 3rd and 4th Rounds: Repeat first round, increasing 12 spaces evenly around.

5th Round: Repeat last rnd, increasing 6 spaces evenly around. There are 102 spacen on round.

6th Round: Work as for first rnd, omitting the increases on First Half and making ch 8 loops (instead of ch 7). On Second Half make 6 sc in each sp around.

7th Round: Cut 6 strands of thread slightly longer than outer edge. Working over the 6 strands, sc in each sc around. Join with sl st in first sc. Cut off remaining strands and fasten ends on wrong side.

SCALLOPS:

1st Row: Sc in next sc, (ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next sc) 8 times. Ch 3, turn.

2nd Row: Sc in first loop, (ch 2, sc in next loop) 7 times. Ch 3, turn.

3rd and 4th Rows: Work as for 2nd row, having 1 loop less on each row. At end of 4th row, ch 1, turn.

5th Row: Sc in first loop, (ch 2, sc in next loop) 4 times. Ch 1, turn.

6th Row: Sc in first loop, (ch 2, sc in next loop) 3 times. Ch 1, turn.

7th, 8th and 9th Rows: Work as for 6th row, having 1 loop less on each row. Sc closely along left side edge of scallop, skip next sc on center. Continue in this manner until 34 scallops have been completed.

Next Round: * Sc closely along right side edge and across top of next scallop, sl st in each sc along left side edge of same scallop. Repeat from * around. Join and cut off.

Sew base of petals neatly together, having right edge overlap the left edge of adjoining petal.

Starch lightly and press.
