  1. Does the pattern state what weight crochet cotton? #10 or #20? I may be crazy, but I think I want to try it.+

  2. Sorry I missed your question. I would try a size 10 crochet thread and if the stitch work is loose looking drop down to a 8 or 9 steel hook.

    1. Worked on this using a heavier yarn to see what I was doing. For Round 2 am coming up with 58 groups of 4 dc. Working ends of 8 dc on Round 1 and in Round 2 am separating them out into 2 groups of 4 dc. (First side plus one end gives 29 4 dc groups, then other side plus end gives another 29 4 dc groups.) Hope this helps!

    1. Hello,

Just quickly looking, and this is guessing for now, after ROUNDS 53 and 54 try repeating ROUNDS 55 and 56 until reaching the extended 6 inches you are trying to obtain. Then continue Rounds 57 onward. It might work.

  7. Hi! I'm loving this pattern. I am on row 29/30 and am wondering if there is an error in direction (or more likely, I'm doing it wrong). In row 29 I was confused by the one sc with one ch across pineapple, in row 30 it calls for SC in the ch 3 sp across the pineapple, but there are no ch 3 sps, only 1 ch sps. I have not have had any difficulty until now.. any help would be appreciated!

Round 29: Sl st into 1st ch 3 sp of pineapple, ch 1, sc in same sp, * (ch 3 sc in next ch 3 sp) across pineapple, ch 4, shell in next ch 3 sp, ch 4 shell in next ch 3 sp, ch 4, sc in 1 st ch 3 sp of next pineapple, rep from * around, ending with ch 3, sl st in starting sc.

  9. I feel stupid, but I got stuck in row 1 already: first it was the dci, but I saw you said it was double crochet increase, which i will have to fix, no big deal. Then at the very end of the row you saod 8 dc in last ch, is it literally just 8 dc in the on ch, or am I understanding wrong? Please help

    2. Okay, I see it's row 1. And have a typo - it's not DCI it's just dc. You would make 8 dc in the end chain and after working on opposite side, make 8 dc in the last chain. Have fixed Round 1.

Round 1: Ch 162, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, * ch 2, sk 2chs, dc in next 4 chs, rep from * across to end, 8 dc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, dc in next 4 chs, (ch 2, sk 2 chs, dc in next 4 chs) rep across, 8 dc in last ch, sl st to join in top of starting ch 3.

      Delete
    3. Thank you.

But I am still confused about the 8 dc in the last chain. Is it like all the rest, or will all the dc be in one single ch?

      Delete
  10. All 8 double crochets will be in that one chain. Like the opposite end, this will form the roundness at each end. I have not made this yet but this is the start of the rounded ends that will follow on other rows of increases to maintain the roundness. Hope this helps.

  13. I absolutely love to crochet! I keep a project going year round. When I
finish one, I start another one. I have bee working on the 1940s Oval
Pineapple tablecloth pattern. I have finished row 36 and started 37. It
just doesn't seem like its working the way my brain thinks it should. the
row begins as row 36. However, what's in the parenthesis doesn't seem to
work (ch 3, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp). To do what is above
where it says 2 dc in next space means I am reaching over 4 dc. I have done
row 36 twice now and I'm 99% sure that I have it correct. (chain 3, dc in
next dc(which leaves a space) chain 3 dc in next dc (which leaves a space)
and two dc in space and a dc in next dc.) What am I missing? or am I
    overthinking? LOL
    Thanks for your help!

    1. Tammy, I hope someone can help answer this. I've looked at the original pattern quite a few times now and can't find a mistake in row 36 or 37. Round 37 does have more increasing in it: Round 37: Ch 6, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc, (ch 3, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc) rep all around, ending with 2 dc in last sp, join with sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch 6. Maybe this will help.

    2. Replace round 36 with round 57. Then round 37 should be okay. From the picture rounds 36-38 look the same as rounds 57-57. I had the same problem with round 37 so I got to looking and round 57 reads slightly differently so I think it should fix the problem.

    3. Tammy, I got to Round 37 last night and found the original directions are incorrect. I rewrote Round 37 and included an image. This pattern has been updated all the way to Round 37. Am still going to finish this pattern as there is a question as to the size and want instructions to be as accurate as possible. Thank you for your questions.

  15. Hello. I have completed this cloth, and it is no where near 60 x 80 inches. I used size 8 crochet cotton. Here in South Africa our cotton os either size 5 or 8. I used the correct hook. The pattern was easy to follow, but did not cone out the right size as expected. How could i enlarge it? Thanks. Pam Clarke

    1. yes i did block the finished cloth. Even blocked and pressed the cloth is nowhere near 60 x 80 inches. I've gone through the table cloth against the pattern row by row. I have not missed any rows. As i said the pattern was easy to follow row by row. I am just doing several "mesh" rows till it reaches the correct size. But thank you for your input.

  16. Have not made this yet and only posted up the original size from the original vintage instructions. Maybe someone else who has posted on here can validate what they have finished and compare the measurements. Am sorry yours did not turn out to the approximate size. The only way to enlarge it, looking at the photo is to repeat where the patterns repeat. As in the photo you can see where like, starting after the second pattern of pineapples (before the last round of pineapples) try an pick up on your and add a rounds of the shells, then works up to the pineapples, and ends again with the chain stitches. Hopefully this will help. Again, sorry yours has not worked out but hopefully this will help you Pam.

  18. I love this pattern but I am having the same problem as Tammy. Round 37 just won't work. I have tried replacing round 36 with 57 as suggested and still can't get it to work. Don't know what I am doing wrong but constantly ripping rows to try and figure it out. The way it is now I too am jumping over 4dc to get to sp.

    1. Hello there. I even bought the magazine which has this pattern and have looked and looked but it has the same instructions for Round 37 as well as 36 with 57. Have still not had the time to try and make this but intend to sit down this weekend and at least get to this round. Until then, I have no answers as the book says the same as what is posted. Am so sorry and am now sure what is going on until trying this myself. But, I will get back to you and let you know if I make it beyond Round 37.

  21. Thank you so much for updating the pattern, I am working on it now but this keeps nagging at me. Many rows at the start call for "sl st to centre of next sp" and then to ch. My question is for example if it is a ch 3 space, I sl st into the 1st chain and then into the 2nd chain or do I sl st into the first 1st chain and then into the space and then ch 3 or whatever to start? Hope this makes sense. Thank you for taking the time to help me out.

    1. If it is slip stitch to center of next space, (like you have 5 dc's, then slip stitch to 3rd dc). If it's a chain 3 space, and there are more than 1 dc to make, I'd slip stitch into the chain 3 space but it there is only 1 dc to make, I'd then sl st to the center of the chain in that space. Hope this helps.

  22. Its row 5, 6 ,7 ,8 ,9 for example, i am jot sure how many chains I should be sl stitching in. You only ch 5 and then dc in next sp

    ReplyDelete
  23. The ch 5 equals a dc plus ch 2. Have read these rows and I would just sl st into the ch 2 space and do your stitches. It has been a little while since making this. Hope this helps. I will add to this pattern about the beginning chains counting as a stitch.

  24. I can't believe I am having trouble with the first row. I chain 162 and dc in the 3rd chain from hook and then I do a dcnin the next 2 chains which gives a total of 3 counting the first chainbone. Then I chsin2 and do a dcnjb the next 4 chains for a group of 4. ( so the first part is already 1 dc short) I do this across and then at the end I am doing a dc in the last 4 chains but my last chain is actually where my last dc is going. I counted and have 162 chain. So am I doing 7 more dc in that last chain too? Could you be so kind as to post a picture of your work on both ends so I can see what I am doing before I give up on this completely. Maybe the ends and the first 5 rows. Thanks for your help.

    2. Have posted a photo under Round 1. Hope this visual helps you. I had no problem on the beginning and if you are still struggling, just add another chain so you can get the amount of dc's required.

  25. I finished this project and it is absolutely stunning, now I am going to make another one but would like it bigger by about 6 inches. Can I repeat row 5 and 6 multiple times do you think with no repercussions ? What I would like to do is put another set of pineapples in it but not sure at which row I would repeat rows to do it or if it would lay flat etc. Any thought on this anyone.

    1. That is so awesome! Am glad its stunning too! It is a pretty lace pattern.

Am not sure about repeating row 5 and 6 because of the increasing to keep in in shape. I know above, someone else asked about extending size and I thought maybe: "Just quickly looking, and this is guessing for now, after ROUNDS 53 and 54 try repeating ROUNDS 55 and 56 until reaching the extended 6 inches you are trying to obtain. Then continue Rounds 57 onward. It might work."

Are you able to tell me what your size came out to be? This was questioned by another commenter and am curious. Thank you so much for letting me know about this long project and how this tablecloth turned out.

    1. Thank you for letting me know as it is a big help to others before they start working on this. Will correct the measurements of this pattern now as I did not get to finish mine yet but am using the same thread and hook (size 7).

    2. My hook is a size 9 / 1.40 Boye. That's the printing on it. I did try the size 7 / 1.65 but my thread was splitting, same with the size 8 / 1.50. I just noticed my first row may be off where I did the 8dc in the end stitch. My one end looks exactly like the picture you posted but the other end has a hole that formed where I did the 8dc in the last chain. It reminds me not when you make a circle and the dc in the circle the little hole that forms. Did I do it wrong?

      Delete
    3. Thank you for letting me know about the hook size. I adjusted the measurements back to where they were and hopefully will finish mine to get the measurement with a size 7 hook.

I know what you mean about the last chain thing and do not think you did anything wrong. Will pay attention to a doily the next time making one and see if there is a way around this and let you know.

      Thank you again!

    4. Have been thinking about your question and try ch 2 instead of ch 3 in the beginning. Just thought about this with some doilies I've made and it helps.
