1949 Victorian Shawl Free Vintage Crochet Pattern
MATERIALS: For shawl 36 inches in diameter, including fringe: This pattern called for 3-ply Baby Wool, 6 (1 oz) balls - Use your own judgement on what type of yarn to use nowadays.
Bone Crochet hook No. 8
GAUGE: 3 rows = 2 inches
Starting at center, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. Work very loosely.
1st Rnd: Ch 4, ( dc in ring, ch 1) 11 times. Sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4 (12 spaces).
2nd Rnd: Sl st in next sp; ch 4, dc in same sp. * in next sp work (ch 1, dc) twice. Repeat from * around. Ch 1, sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4 (24 spaces 12 spaces increased)
3rd Rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, dc in same sp, * ch 1, dc in next sp; in next sp work (ch 1, dc) twice. Repeat from * around. Ch 1, join. (12 space increase)
4th Rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, dc in same sp, * work ch 1 and dc in each of next 2 sps, inc 1 sp in next sp. Repeat from * around. Ch 1, join. Increase 12 spaces each round (directly over increase of previous round) until shawl measures 17 inches from center. Do Not Break Off.
FRINGE: Cut cardboard strip 1 1/2 inches wide. Draw up loop on hook to about 2 inches, slip hook over cardboard and remove hook. * Insert hook through both loops of next stitch and draw loop through, ch 1, draw up loop on hook to about 2 inches, sl loop onto cardboard. Repeat from * working loop in each ch and dc around, moving cardboard along. Break off. Steam lightly if desired.
