Star Stitch Calot Hat - FREE 1952 Vintage Crochet Pattern
This is a pattern from an old book my Grandmother gave to me and have re-typed it and added the photo and diagram. Materials have changed over the years so substitute what you need.
STAR STITCH CALOT
Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn - 2 balls
Rug Hook Size G
Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: 14 sc in ring. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up loop through, insert hook in next chain and draw loop through, insert hook in back loop of next sc and draw a loop through; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten ( a star made) *Insert hook in fastening ch and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in the back loop of sc where last loop of last star st was drawn through and draw loop through, insert hook in back loop of next sc and draw loop through; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (another star made). Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd st of 1st ch 3 (14 star sts). 3rd rnd: Ch 1, *sc in top of next star st, sc in fastening ch of same star st. Repeat from * around. Join (28 sc). 4th rnd: Repeat 2nd rnd (28 star sts). 5th rnd: Ch 1, *sc in top of each next 2 star sts, sc in next fastening ch. Repeat from * around. Join (42 sc) 6th rnd: Repeat 2nd rnd (42 star sts). 7th rnd: Ch 1, sc in fastening ch of each star st around. Join (42 sc). 8th to 11th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd and 7th rnds alternately twice (42 sc). Make st st in each st around adjusting the stitches to fit your head size. Fasten off.
Ch 9, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in next ch, 2 sc in next, sc in next 5 ch. Fasten off. Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 4 sc, 2 sc in next ch, 3 sc in next, 5 sc in last ch. Fasten off. Sew both pieces together along edges and fasten securly to top of Caolot.
To begin a row on a foundation chain, insert hook in second chain from hook, thread over and draw a loop through. Do the same in the third, fourth and fifth chains, always bringing the thread to the level of the first stitch and keeping all loops on hook. Thread over and draw through all the loops at once. (FIG 31). Ch 1 to fasten.
To make next star stitch, insert hook in following 4 sts and draw a loop through each time (FIG 32).
1. The fastening chain (A).
2. The last loop of previous star stitch (B).
3. The stitch where the last loop of the last star stitch was drawn through (C).
4. The next stitch (D).
Always bring the thread to the level of the first stitch and keep all loops on hook. Thread over and draw through all loops at once. Ch 1 to fasten.
